Authors

Edward Tufte
Envisioning Information and others
http://www.salon.com/march97/tufte970310.html
I learned for the first time how cool information really was.

John Irving
http://www.randomhouse.com/atrandom/johnirving/
I loved it when Garp bought the house after the plane went through it. I always try to live my life that way.

Tom Robbins
http://www.januarymagazine.com/profiles/robbins.html
His characters helped me realize that my mom was pretty normal.

Stephen King
http://www.stephenking.com
Doesn’t every adolescent read him? Come on – admit it. The Stand was the first "big novel" that I read cover to cover in one weekend. It was a rite of passage.

Anne Dillard
http://www.nytimes.com/books/99/03/28/specials/dillard.html

I’m not much a fan of her writing, but I heard her speak once. She reminded me to be proud of Denbo. Very, very proud.

Books

First Break All the Rules, What the World’s Greatest Managers Do Differently
I was managing a very young team – most of them my age – and struggling. The advice I was getting basically sucked. I picked this book up in O’Hare on the way to Salt Lake City of all places. Turned me from the boss into a manager and leader.

The Experience Economy
Designing web sites made so much more sense after reading this. I am now the queen of the "experience."

The Design of Everyday Things
I was relieved to know that when I can’t open a door, I’m not stupid. It’s an artifact of poor design. This is one of those "lightbulb books" for anyone who reads it.

And the Band Played On
Randy Shiltz
There are positives and negatives to realizing that there are worse things than being dead.

Lawrence and Oppenheimer
Nuel Pharr Davis
After reading this I realized that America is not always the good guy. In life, most decisions are based on lesser evils – not what is right or just.

Music

Jane’s Addiction
http://wallofsound.go.com/artists/janesaddiction/home.html
Got to see them at the Alladin Theater in Vegas during their reunion tour. The show was unbeilivable!

Happy Mondays
http://homepage.tinet.ie/~cmcgrane/mondays/
For those times when you’re feeling sad AND a little peppy.

Styx
http://www.styxworld.com
Yes, I know, Mr. Roboto. But once you forget about that, they were a really cool rock band. I would listen to them for hours with those big, puffy headphones that made your neck wobble.

Steve Miller Band
http://www.stevemillerband.com/
Even my 8 year-old daughter loves them now. They stand the test of time.

John Cougar Mellencamp
http://www.mellencamp.com/
We were all young once. I liked him better without the Mellencamp.
